Titanium Gr.5: Do's and Don'ts in Volume Machining
Tooling strategies, coolant, and feeds directly from the shop floor experience.

Titanium Gr.5 (Ti-6Al-4V) is the material of choice for aerospace and medical applications, but high-volume machining requires a technological discipline that few workshops systematically apply. At Mepro Sisteme, we have delivered over 40,000 titanium parts in the last two years for industrial engineering clients in Romania and for export.
Rules We Never Break
- Constant feeds — never dwell in the material
- High-pressure coolant (70 bar+) direct through the tool
- Tools with positive geometries and AlTiN or TiAlSiN coatings
- Maximum radial engagement 30% of the tool diameter
Trochoidal Milling: The Golden Rule
Trochoidal strategies allow us to utilise the entire cutting length, distributing wear uniformly across the tool. The result: double tool life compared to traditional pocketing and surface consistency that reduces visual inspection by 70%.
Real Costs
A good titanium tool costs 280-450 EUR. It seems like a lot — until you calculate that a low-cost tool fails after 8 parts, while a premium one processes 60 parts with stable Ra. For serious mechanical machining, false economy on tools is the most expensive decision.
“In titanium, speed doesn't come from high RPM — it comes from never stopping.”
